Firefighters climb 1,311 steps for charity

Money is used to help fight leukemia and lymphoma

There may not be a skyscraper within 60 miles of Stayton and Turner, but firefighters from both agencies accepted a challenge to climb the second-tallest building west of the Mississippi River for a good cause.

Firefighters from Stayton and Turner chose to add more than 50 pounds of protective equipment to raise money for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as part of the Scotts Firefighter Stairclimb, held each year in Seattle.

This was the event’s 17th year and the first for Stayton and Turner firefighters. More than 1,300 firefighters from across the United States and as far away as New Zealand participated.

Volunteer Derek Gilbert said it was humbling when he first saw a picture and story of a 5-year-old child stricken with leukemia and realized why they were doing the stair climb.
